The History of National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day

Would you believe that your favorite chocolate chip cookie was invented by accident?

It all happened in 1938 when Ruth Graves Wakefield, the owner, and baker of the Toll House Inn (Whitman, Massachusetts), ran out of baker’s chocolate to make cookies and decided to use the average chocolate bar instead. However, unlike the baker’s chocolate that melts into the cookie dough, the chunks of the regular semi-sweet chocolate did not dissolve in the dough; instead, it filled it with chocolate chunks.

The chocolate “accident” brought a lot of success to Ruth, causing her to establish her own company to sell her new chocolate chip cookies. Initially, Ruth called the chocolate cookies ‘Chocolate Crunch Cookies’, which were the size of a quarter. Many versions of the chocolate chip cookie have come up over time. They comprise different chocolate flavors, something that makes every version unique. Today, chocolate chip cookies are among the most loved treat in American households.

Ruth’s chocolate cookies continued to gain popularity to the extent of Nestle asking to share her recipe on their wrapper in exchange for a lifetime of free cookies, which she accepted.
